Vincent W.S. Chan

Vincent W.S. Chan, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Professor of EECS, MIT, received his BS(71), MS(71), EE(72), and Ph.D.(74) degrees in EE from MIT. From 1974 to 1977, he was an assistant professor, EE, at Cornell University. He joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory in 1977 and had been Division Head of the Communications and Information Technology Division until becoming the Director of the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (1999–2007). In July 1983, he initiated the Laser Intersatellite Transmission Experiment Program and the follow-on GeoLITE Program. In 1989, he formed and chaired the All-Optical-Network Consortium among MIT, AT&T and DEC, the Next Generation Internet Consortium, ONRAMP among AT&T, Cabletron, MIT, Nortel and JDS, and a Satellite Networking Research Consortium formed between MIT, Motorola, Teledesic and Globalstar. He chaired the Defense Science Board Task Force on Defense Communications, Networks and Satellite Communications and the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Advisory Committee. He also has been active with start-ups and was a Board Member of a Fortune-500 network company and a member of the Draper Corporation. After chairing the Strategic Planning Committee of ComSoc from 2018-2019, he is serving as the President of the IEEE Communication Society since January 2020.

Keynote Speech on “In-Network Computing for Future Communication Services”

Abstract: The talk will motivate the need for computing within a communication network. Different technologies to realize this paradigm shift are introduced. The talk also advocates the potential of integrating novelty such as AI, compressed sensing, network coding easily into communication networks without lengthy standardization processes.

Prof. Frank H.P. Fitzek (Technische Universität Dresden, Germany)

Frank H. P. FitzekFrank H. P. Fitzek is a Professor and head of the “Deutsche Telekom Chair of Communication Networks” at TU Dresden coordinating the 5G Lab Germany. He is the spokesman of the DFG Cluster of Excellence CeTI. He received his diploma (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Technology – Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) – Aachen, Germany, in 1997 and his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University Berlin, Germany in 2002 and became Adjunct Professor at the University of Ferrara, Italy in the same year. In 2003 he joined Aalborg University as Associate Professor and later became Professor. He co-founded several start-up companies starting with acticom GmbH in Berlin in 1999. He has visited various research institutes including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), VTT, and Arizona State University. In 2005 he won the YRP award for the work on MIMO MDC and received the Young Elite Researcher Award of Denmark. He was selected to receive the NOKIA Champion Award several times in a row from 2007 to 2011. In 2008 he was awarded the Nokia Achievement Award for his work on cooperative networks. In 2011 he received the SAPERE AUDE research grant from the Danish government and in 2012 he received the Vodafone Innovation prize. In 2015 he was awarded the honorary degree “Doctor Honoris Causa” from Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE). His current research interests are in the areas of wireless and 5G communication networks, network coding, cloud computing, compressed sensing, cross layer as well as energy efficient protocol design and cooperative networking.

Short talk on “Neutroon: A Multi-vendor, Multi-RAT, Management and Orchestration Platform Democratizing Private 5G”

Matteo Grandi

Matteo Grandi, is Head of Business Development at Neutroon Technologies, a Spanish startup aimed at democratizing the private 5G market and developing an ecosystem of applications around advanced connectivity. In the past he served as Innovation Manager delivering high innovative solutions in the fields of wireless communications, IIoT, and Industry 4.0, collaborating with multinational industrial players as P&G, Whirlpool, Schindler, Bosh, the Volkswagen group, among others, and with telcos and MNOs (Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, TIM, Telenor, Telefonica). Before that, Matteo worked in the research environment on SD-WAN related topics. Telecommunication engineer from University of Pisa and Polytechnic University of Catalunya, Matteois currently finalizing an MBA in a top-5 business school in Europe.

 

Andrea Campanella (ONF)
Short talk on “ONF’s Work Towards Open Source 5G, Disaggregated RAN and Connected Edge”

Andrea CampanellaAndrea Campanella, is employed as a Member of Technical staff (MTS) at Open Networking Foundation (ONF). Andrea obtained a Master’s degree (110/110) in computer science at the Public University of Milan in December 2016 after a Bachelor degree in digital communication in July 2014. The master degree program and the final thesis work focused on computer networks and SDN, with specific attention to southbound protocols and paths to production.

Andrea started working with ONF through an internship in October 2015. Andrea is currently part of the SEBA/VOLTHA team taking fiber to the home open source solution in production with service providers across the globe. Andrea also leads the Optical Disaggregated Transport Network (ODTN), acting also as the bridge between the ONF ODTN community and TIP’s OOPT group. Andrea also worked on P4 solution, Trellis hardening and tools. He is currently part of the first team working on configuration for the new µONOS platform. Andrea also sits on the ONOS Technical Steering Team.

In his free time Andrea enjoys photography, sailing, biking, basketball, rock climbing and the outdoors in general.

 

Cinzia Sartori (Nokia, Germany)
Short talk on “O-RAN Tech-Talk”

Cinzia SartoriCinzia Sartori is a NOKIA Bell Lab Fellow and principal expert in the field of Mobile Network Architecture. She is engaged in end-to-end 5G Network Architecture with special focus on O-RAN and 3GPP, covering radio, transport, core networks as well as Slice Management and Orchestration. She looks at near term network and slicing deployment as well as evolution in the longer term. In this field she started since the early days being one of the originators of H2020 5G NORMA project. Earlier she led the ‘Self-Organizing Network (SON) Research and Standardization’ project in Nokia Siemens Networks, worked in the RRM, Network Telecom, O&M, and as SA2 delegate. She holds several international patents, contributed several conference papers and she’s co-editor of “LTE Self-Organizing Network” book. She graduated as engineer in Pavia -Italy.

Abstract: This presentation will highlight recent efforts by ComSoc and IEEE to broaden participation, engagement, and success in communications engineering. Worldwide trends and initiatives will be described. The talk will conclude with a discussion of emerging efforts towards diversity, equity, and inclusion, and what remains to be done.

Maïté Brandt-Pearce

Maïté Brandt-Pearce is a professor of Electrical Engineering and Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at the University of Virginia. She joined UVA after receiving her Ph.D. from Rice University. Her research interests include free-space optical communications and fiber-optics networks subject to physical layer degradations. In 2013, she co-founded a start-up called VLNComm to develop visible light communication technology. Dr. Brandt-Pearce is the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award and an NSF RIA. She is a co-recipient of Best Paper Awards at ICC 2006 and GLOBECOM 2012. She had served on the editorial board of IEEE Transaction of Communications, IEEE Communications Letters, IEEE/OSA Journal of Optical Communications and Networks and Springer Photonic Network Communications. After serving as General Chair of the Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems & Computers in 2009, she served as Technical Vice-Chair of GLOBECOM 2016. She is currently the chair of WICE (ComSoc Women in Communications Engineering).

Short talk on “Diversity and Inclusion - The Industry Gap”

Muriel MedardMuriel Médard is the Cecil H. and Ida Green Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department at MIT, where she leads the Network Coding and Reliable Communications Group in the Research Laboratory for Electronics at MIT. She obtained three Bachelors degrees (EECS 1989, Mathematics 1989 and Humanities 1991), as well as her M.S. (1991) and Sc.D (1995), all from MIT. She is a Member of the US National Academy of Engineering (elected 2020), a Fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors (elected 2018), and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (elected 2008). Muriel was elected president of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 2012, and served on its board of governors for eleven years. She holds an Honorary Doctorate from the Technical University of Munich (2020).

She was co-winner of the MIT 2004 Harold E. Egerton Faculty Achievement Award and was named a Gilbreth Lecturer by the US National Academy of Engineering in 2007. She received the 2017 IEEE Communications Society Edwin Howard Armstrong Achievement Award and the 2016 IEEE Vehicular Technology James Evans Avant Garde Award. She received the 2019 Best Paper award for IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering, the 2018 ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time Paper Award, the 2009 IEEE Communication Society and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award, the 2009 William R. Bennett Prize in the Field of Communications Networking, the 2002 IEEE Leon K. Kirchmayer Prize Paper Award, as well as eight conference paper awards. Most of her prize papers are co-authored with students from her group.

She has served as technical program committee co-chair of ISIT (twice), CoNext, WiOpt, WCNC and of many workshops. She has chaired the IEEE Medals committee, and served as member and chair of many committees, including as inaugural chair of the Millie Dresselhaus Medal. She was Editor in Chief of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications and has served as editor or guest editor of many IEEE publications, including the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, the IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology, and the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. She was a member of the inaugural steering committees for the IEEE Transactions on Network Science and for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Information Theory.

Muriel received the inaugural 2013 MIT EECS Graduate Student Association Mentor Award, voted by the students. She set up the Women in the Information Theory Society (WithITS) and Information Theory Society Mentoring Program, for which she was recognized with the 2017 Aaron Wyner Distinguished Service Award. She served as undergraduate Faculty in Residence for seven years in two MIT dormitories (2002–2007). She was elected by the faculty and served as member and later chair of the MIT Faculty Committee on Student Life and as inaugural chair of the MIT Faculty Committee on Campus Planning. She was chair of the Institute Committee on Student Life. She was recognized as a Siemens Outstanding Mentor (2004) for her work with High School students. She serves on the Board of Trustees since 2015  of the International School of Boston, for which she is treasurer.

She has over fifty US and international patents awarded, the vast majority of which have been licensed or acquired. For technology transfer, she has co-founded three companies, CodeOn, for which she consults, Chocolate Cloud, on whose board she serves, and Steinwurf, for which she is Chief Scientist.

Muriel has supervised over 40 master students, over 20 doctoral students and over 25 postdoctoral fellows.

 

Nada Golmie (NIST, USA)

Short talk on “DEI for Innovations in Next Generation Communications”

Nada GolmieNada Golmie received her Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Maryland at College Park. Since 1993, she has been a research engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. She is a NIST Fellow and is currently the chief of the wireless networks division in the Communications Technology Laboratory. Her research in media access control and protocols for wireless networks led to over 100 technical papers presented at professional conferences, journals, and contributed to international standard organizations and industry led consortia.  She is the author of “Coexistence in Wireless Networks: Challenges and System-level Solutions in the Unlicensed Bands," published by Cambridge University Press (2006). She leads several projects related to the modeling and evaluation of future generation wireless systems and protocols and serves as a co-chair for the Next5G Channel Model Alliance.

 

Ana Garcia Armada (U3CM, Spain)

Ana García Armada

Ana García Armada is a Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain. She has participated in more than 60 national and international research projects and contracts with the industry. Her research has resulted in more than 150 publications in prestigious international journals and conferences, as well as 5 patents. She has been Editor and Area Editor of IEEE Communication Letters. She is Editor of IEEE Transactions on Communications since 2019, Area Editor of IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society since 2019, Editor of the ITU Journal on Future and Evolving Technologies and is a regular member of the technical program committees of the most relevant international conferences in his field. She has formed / is part of the organizing committee of the IEEE Globecom 2019 and 2021 (General Chair), IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference Spring 2018, 2019 and Fall 2018, among others. She is Secretary of the IEEE ComSoc Signal Processing and Computing for Communications Committee, has been Secretary and Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Women in Communications Engineering Standing Committee. Since January 2020 she is Director of Online Content of the IEEE Communications Society. She has received the Award of Excellence from Universidad Carlos II de Madrid, as well as the third place Bell Labs Prize 2014, the Outstanding Service Award 2019 from the SPCE committee of the IEEE Communications Society and the Outstanding Service Award 2020 from the Women in Communications Engineering (WICE) standing committee.

Shashank Gaur

Shashank Gaur is Systems Engineer for Platform Architecture at TTTech Auto, providing safe software and hardware platforms for automated driving. Shashank contributes to topics such as Time Sensitive Networking and Scheduling for in-vehicle communication. Shashank also actively engages in TSN standards activities on behalf of TTTech Auto. Shashank is also Chair of ComSoc's Young Professionals group where he leads a team of volunteers across various projects such as events at flagship conferences, blog, webinars, etc. Shashank is also Chair of Tools Subcommittee of IEEE Conferences Committee. Shashank has been volunteering for IEEE for 15+ years across various OUs such as RAS, MGA, Region 8, TAB and ComSoc.
